What is a Domain Age Checker?

A domain age checker is a free online tool that tells you when a domain name was first registered and how old it is today. This free tool uses the public RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) API to retrieve domain registration information — including the exact creation date, expiration date, and registrar name — without requiring any API key or account.

You can check a single domain or multiple domains at once, making it ideal for SEO research, domain acquisition due diligence, and competitor analysis.

How to Check Domain Age

  • Step 1: Enter the domain name in the input field (without http:// or www). For example: example.com
  • Step 2: Click "Check Age" or press Enter.
  • Step 3: The tool queries the RDAP database and returns the domain's age, registration date, expiry date, and registrar.
  • Step 4: To check multiple domains, use the bulk input box — one domain per line.

Why Check Domain Age?

Domain age matters for several reasons in SEO and digital marketing:

  • SEO Authority: Older domains typically have more backlinks and established trust with search engines, contributing to higher domain authority scores.
  • Domain Acquisition: When buying expired or aged domains for SEO purposes, checking the age and registration history is essential for evaluating value.
  • Competitor Research: Knowing when a competitor's domain was registered helps you understand their market history and growth trajectory.
  • Due Diligence: Before purchasing a website or domain, verify its age to assess whether claimed traffic or authority metrics are plausible.
  • Spam Detection: Very new domains (less than 6 months old) associated with suspicious emails or links may indicate phishing or spam campaigns.

Domain Age and SEO: What You Need to Know

Google has publicly stated that domain age is a ranking factor, but a minor one compared to content quality and backlink profile. However, domain age indirectly signals trust: an older domain is more likely to have accumulated legitimate backlinks, indexed content, and user behavior signals that boost rankings.

New domains can and do rank quickly in competitive niches, especially with high-quality content and strong link building. The key insight is that domain age correlates with authority — it's the history of a domain that matters, not just the registration date.

Understanding RDAP Data

This tool uses the RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) standard, which replaced the older WHOIS system as the official way to query domain registration data. RDAP provides structured JSON responses that include creation date, expiration date, last updated date, registrar information, and name server data.

Note: Some domain registries (particularly country-code TLDs like .de, .uk, .jp) may not fully support RDAP or may redact registration dates for privacy reasons. In these cases, the tool will display whatever data is available or indicate that the data could not be retrieved.
